It is to be proud that the quality of an original product is widely recognized, and jewelry from Cuenca enjoys this privilege. The fine pieces made by our skilled artisans captivate anyone who sees them.
The goldsmiths and jewelers of Cuenca have unmatched skills, which they have perfected by integrating craft techniques like embossing, filigree, and wax modeling, among others. A key factor that boosted this activity is the availability of raw materials in the surrounding area, such as silver, gold, and precious and semiprecious stones.
Jewelry contributed greatly to the economic development of the city in the mid-twentieth century, and Cuenca is recognized as the cradle of Ecuadorian jewelry. Names such as Julio Segovia Andrade, José Manzano Tapia, and Ariolfo Vázquez made an enormous contribution to achieving this distinction.
The historic center has been home to the most acclaimed jewelry stores and artisan workshops, mainly on Gran Colombia Street from Padre Aguirre St. to Hermano Miguel St. Currently, the jewelry in Cuenca also stands out for the integration of contemporary designs.
Cuenca Jewelry Museum
The site that the beauty of this art deserves is in the vibrant historic center of the city, on Gran Colombia Street – the same place where several workshops dedicated to the production and marketing of fine jewelry were once located. Fausto Ordóñez runs this museum with the main purpose of preserving the legacy and exhibiting such great examples of the richness of this land. Beyond the value of the pieces, there is the invaluable work of the jewelers and goldsmiths who make them.
The museum consists of several spaces that you can visit: you can take a tour through the trajectory of the most distinguished artisans and the tools and techniques they use, a workshop where you can appreciate the elaboration process, and an exhibition room with jewelry for sale.
