Wood carving

Woodwork is a central element in Cuenca’s artisan culture; it is part of its architecture and sculptures, and a testimony of the heritage that we must preserve. In the historic center of the city, you can see the use of carved wood in some elements present in colonial houses, republican houses, churches, and convents, such as religious sculptures, altars, balconies, and delicately carved doors.

Gaspar Sangurima

A genius wood sculptor of the nineteenth-century school of Cuenca who from a very young age felt a passion for art. The most representative theme of his works is religious imagery with deep realism. Several churches still preserve his creations, some of which can be appreciated in the Sala Capitular de Carmen de la Asunción of the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum, located in Calle Larga St.

Virgilio Quinde

A carver of much notoriety in the city, Virgilio Quinde was destined to become a great artist from his early years. His first wood carving was a Venus de Valdivia, with which he won a national contest being just a boy. His workshop is located in the historic center of Cuenca, where he began carving and restoring religious images.

Jaime Jimbo

A prodigious craftsman who has been sculpting wood for decades. Few people of his generation still carry out this artisan work. In his workshop, you can appreciate several pieces sculpted in wood, mostly with religious themes. He has made works for different religious institutions at national and international levels. He has also restored antiques and damaged pieces. His carved images are venerated in local and national temples, and even abroad.
