Wellness, rest and health in warm pools and spas
The rural parish of Baños, south west of the city of Cuenca, is considered one of the most attractive places to rest and recover. It has been almost eight decades since the use of the hot springs of this area for recreational and healing purposes began.

Baños has kept its image of a typical Andean rural town, dominated by its imposing sky-blue temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The church was built by community workers in the 1950s. It is an imitation of the New Cathedral, in the center of Cuenca. The upper part of the parish serves as a viewpoint of the city. The festival in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe is held on September 8.
However, everything changed in the town with the modernization of its thermal water spas, inns and local cuisine restaurants. There are different offers to enjoy services such as: whirlpools, professional massages, surface and underground pools, contrast hydrotherapy, mud therapy, Turkish baths, among others.
When it comes to gastronomy, the famous cheese empanadas stand out. The culinary tradition that makes Baños famous was started by Rosa Nasipucha. Currently, there is a wide range of cuisines in dozens of establishments.
The thermal waters of Baños have healing properties. These waters have their origin in “La Loma de los Hervideros” (Hervideros Hill). They come to the surface at a temperature of 167°F. After cooling, they are used at about 99 to 107°C. José Barros Alemán, a senior citizen from the parish, recalls that the spa service was started by the family of Ricardo Durán Brito and Matilde Alemán, who founded Balnearios Durán (an inn) in the 1940s. Don José remembers that people walked from Cuenca, as there there was no transportation available in those days. They were groups of young people from colleges and universities, who went to the only place in near Cuenca with a 25-meter pool to practice swimming; more pools started opening after that. More recently, increasingly specialized services in the wellness and beauty area, within the “spa” category, such as Piedra de Agua or Novaqua Spa have opened.
