“Recognition Travel 2022” is an event aimed at the main actors of the Horeca community, decision-makers of the sector, local autonomous governments, and other links in the value chain of the tourism industry. The event is designed to create business opportunities and a space where they can share successful experiences, and address issues on tourism and its importance in the country. In addition to the meeting held on Wednesday, November 16 at the Metropolitan Convention Center in Quito, an award ceremony was carried out to recognize the work of the promoters and managers of tourism in the country, thanks to whom travelers from all over the world keep coming to Ecuador to live amazing experiences.
The event, sponsored by Ekos, recognized the best destinations, restaurants, and other attractions in twenty categories that were carefully selected by means of a thorough survey done to domestic tourists – who chose the best cities to visit – as well as foreigners – who gave their opinion on the performance of the Quito and Guayaquil airports.
Thanks to the coordinated work of several entities of the Municipal Corporation, led by the Mayor of Cuenca, Pedro Palacios Ullauri, the city has become an example of tourism management and promotion, and the preferred destination throughout Ecuador. Thus, Cuenca received awards for:
1st place: Best City or Destination to visit. Category: Foreign Tourist.
2nd place: Best City or Destination to visit. Category: National Tourist.
2nd place: Best place or destination in Ecuador to visit. Category: Gastronomic Tourism.
2nd place: Best place or destination in Ecuador to visit. Category: Cultural and Heritage Tourism.
The Public Company ETAPA was also awarded:
3rd place: Best place or destination in Ecuador to visit. Category: National Reserve Park.
“Cuenca is a city with a very interesting dynamic in its planning, management, care, and promotion, all of which improve the quality of life of its citizens and allow them to receive tourists under better and better conditions in terms of services, attractions, and experiences, all thanks to the investment of the private sector, who have believed in the potential of Cuenca and dared to bring new ideas that further enhance the tourism offer of the city. That is why I am so proud to receive these awards today, as a recognition that strengthens and motivates us to continue making Cuenca the preferred city to visit not only in the country but also in Latin America,” said Pedro Palacios, Mayor of Cuenca.

The methodology used to define the award winners was as follows:
- First, the main cities and destinations were identified, according to preferences by category.
- Then, the most attractive destinations throughout the country were identified, considering their level of capacity and preparedness for tourism, according to preferences related to tourist attractions, safety, hygiene, accessibility, readiness, perception of value, environmental sustainability, quality of infrastructure, and quality of the tourist services provided.
- At the same time, the most attractive experiences available in the country were researched: best restaurants, best hotels, favorite festivities, and favorite dishes, among others.
- With all this information, an ‘ideal travel planner for Ecuador’ was elaborated, which includes all the must-see sites and experiences in the country.
- The results of the Travel.ec awards will be published in the December special edition of Ekos magazine and Travel.ec.
