On Wednesday, December 7th, starting at 6 PM in the Square of Santo Domingo Church, together with the Dominican Community of the Santísimo Rosario Convent, the University of Azuay, and the Municipal Tourism Foundation for Cuenca, we will be celebrating the 89th anniversary of the Coronation of the “Virgen Morenica del Rosario” as Patron Saint of Cuenca and Azuay.
This year, the anniversary of the Morenica will be celebrated with a great Festival of Lights. More than five thousand lanterns will be placed in the Santo Domingo square, Basilica, Santísimo Rosario Convent, and inside the Dominican Educational Center, in the shape of the Virgin’s crown and other allegories to her, for the enjoyment of parishioners and visitors.
Attendees are welcome to come and light the lanterns or bring their own if they prefer.
The Festival of Lights is a non-peak season festival that attracts tourists from all over the world to live unique experiences together with the locals, who express their faith in the Patron Saint that guards their historic city.
For the whole afternoon and evening, the tourist services of the historic center of the city will be very busy, so the tourist services have been preparing special offers to welcome the visitors, with the usual quality and hospitality provided by the people of Cuenca.
With these activities we reaffirm our commitment to the city’s thriving, offering visitors the possibility of having unique, memorable experiences thanks to direct advice from tourism specialists, according to the needs and traits of each visitor.
After the lights, the party will continue with a night of music and art at the Central School.
